2012 Vintage Notes

2012 afforded Napa with an ideal growing season from beginning to end. A mild spring led to a good fruit set, then summer and fall brought warm temperatures without any heat waves. All the fruit enjoyed a long, slow ripening, indicating early that the Cabernet would be dark, rich and age worthy as with the 2001, 2002 and 2007 seasons. The saturation of color is amazing - the wines are almost black, and the Bordeaux varieties are heavy with sweet tannins that are not drying at all. One of the largest harvests on record, the only challenged presented to Cultivar was where to put all the grapes.

Atlas Peak Appellation

The Atlas Peak AVA is located within the Napa Valley AVA, just northeast of the city of Napa. The appellation sits on a higher elevation than most of Napa's wine region which limits the effects of the cool fog coming in from the Pacific Ocean. The westward orientation of most vineyards on the Vaca Mountains also extends the amount of direct sunlight on the grapes. The soil of this AVA is volcanic and very porous which allows it to cool down quickly despite the increased sunlight. The area has a fairly significant diurnal temperature variation upwards of 30 degrees between daytime and night. This contributes to the balance of acidity that grapes from Atlas Peak vineyards are known to have.

2012
Cultivar Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2012 Atlas Peak is a deep red color. Right from the start the wine has brighter notes than other Cabernets with more floral and spicey aromas, with a hue of sweet oak. You also taste Red raspberries and cranberry flavors, with a hint of all spice. The wine dances on the palate elegantly and pretty. The fruit has great structure with acidity and tannins.  Do let the wine sit in the glass for a few minutes before drinking.  A few years of cellaring will be well rewarded.

This would pair well wit Lamb or pork dishes on cool winter nights.
