2016 Vintage Notes

The near-perfect 2016 growing season started early, saw ideal weather conditions throughout and wrapped up as the valley's first significant fall rainstorm arrived on October 14. Thanks to a relatively steady and mild July and August and then a series of warm days at the end of the growing season, vineyards were able to progress to perfect ripeness. Wines from the 2016 vintage are now quietly developing in cellars throughout Napa Valley and vintners are pinching themselves and smiling for the gift it appears Mother Nature has given them: a fifth consecutive vintage of stellar quality Napa Valley wines.

Atlas Peak Appellation

The Atlas Peak AVA is located within the Napa Valley AVA, just northeast of the city of Napa. The appellation sits at a higher elevation than most of Napa's wine region which limits the effects of the cool fog coming in from the Pacific Ocean. The westward orientation of most vineyards on the Vaca Mountains also extends the amount of direct sunlight on the grapes. The soil of this AVA is volcanic and very porous which allows it to cool down quickly despite the increased sunlight. The area has a fairly significant diurnal temperature variation upwards of 30 degrees between daytime and night. This contributes to the balance of acidity that grapes from Atlas Peak vineyards are known to have.

2016
Cultivar Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon

There are wines from day one of harvest that capture your attention. The 2013 Atlas Peak is one of those. It had great color and intensity from the start. Dark purple, blue and red colors capture the eye, while aromas of black currant and sweet plum lift from the glass. On the palate, the wine is rich with lush dark fruits, while a touch of oak adds complexity and length to the palate. The tannins are long and integrated. For those of you who had the chance to enjoy our 2012 Howell Mountain, this reminds us of that wine with more richness and depth. While extremely tempting to enjoy now, it will age beautifully for the next decade.
